About Film
Suburb is an environment-centred animation about London suburbs at night from the perspective of foxes, focusing on mood and atmosphere
We aim to create a short 2D animated digital film. Targeted mainly at those who have a special interest in animation and experimental animation in particular, the film would also appeal more to teenagers and adults in general.

Director's intent

Suburb is, in many ways, an experimental film in its painterly style and the way it segments the screen, drawing focus to different forms of detritus around London, while also creating a chaos reflecting the perspective of the foxes scrambling to survive in a man-made environment. The intention with this film wasn’t to lead the audience excessively with a clear narrative, but instead cultivate a mood and environment taking us to a brief encounter with these foxes, as if we were stumbling upon them on a drunk walk home.
Synopsis
Compared to the bustling life of London’s City, in the quiet, static suburb, lurk foxes. Suburb is a glimpse into what mischief these enigmatic creatures wreak on their man-made surroundings.

Genre
The genre of the film is a fusion between experimental animation and surrealism. Our film uses moving panels and animated backgrounds to show a glimpse into the secret of city fox's mysterious life, following the rhythm of saxophone without a specific narration.

Thematic Overview
- Urban loneliness
- Nature versus man made
- Innocence versus cruel world
- Survival of the fittest
These themes will be articulated through the fox as a symbol of nature and
innocence thriving in a man made environment. It will retain fairly naturalist
features and not be Disney field or overly cute, as we don’t want it to be
anthropomorphised/human.

Visual Style
Suburb features a painting style with lineless backgrounds. The technique for which we've been referencing Tommy Kim, Angela Sung, and other contemporary environment painters in the way they build up colour and light through blocky subtle shapes. Frequently warped perspective also serves to enhance the the sense of chaos experienced by the foxes in this man made world.
